Gum infections can make your blood glucose levels harder to manage. Studies have shown that even people with controlled diabetes have more gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Diabetics may experience lower resistance to infection, and also delayed wound healing after periodontal treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">There are two forms of gum disease that can develop:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Gingivitis<\/strong> \u2013 a reversible form of gum disease that presents as inflammation \u2013 red, swollen bleeding gums, caused by the presence of plaque bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Periodontitis<\/strong> \u2013 a destructive, and irreversible, form of gum disease that can develop if gingivitis is left untreated, that presents with gum and bone loss around the teeth, caused by the body\u2019s response to the bacteria.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citydentists.co.nz\/dental-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diabetes-and-periodontal_med.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-541\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citydentists.co.nz\/dental-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diabetes-and-periodontal_med.jpeg\" alt=\"diabetes-and-periodontal-disease\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is therefore important if you have diabetes, to take extra care with your oral health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Here are <\/span><span class=\"s1\">6 ways to manage your oral health if you suffer from Diabetes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Monitor and manage your blood glucose levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Make healthy food choices<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Smoking can worsen oral problems so try to quit smoking \u2013 we can help you with this, providing support and Nicotine Replacement Therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brush and clean in between your teeth to prevent plaque build upon your teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Check your mouth regularly for any symptoms of concerns like bleeding gums, dryness, soreness, white patches, or bad taste in the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Visit your dentist and dental hygienist regularly<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is evidence of a relationship between diabetes and gum disease.
