Morning breath: What is it and how do you get rid of it?

In a world where pores are huge and nail beds suck, do you have really bad breath in the morning? Even after you've brushed your teeth before bed, you may still be waking up with a weird funk in your mouth. What gives?

Bad breath isn't killing anyone necessarily, but that doesn't mean you want to be known as the guy to avoid close conversations with! We're here to tell you that bad breath isn't the end of the world – in fact there are some 80 million people suffering with it – and you can easily fight the stink off yourself.

What is morning breath?

Other than that thing that keeps your partner from giving you a good morning smooch, that is. Morning breath is really just the stinky nickname given to those who with chronic halitosis. It typically occurs from either bad oral hygiene or gum disease. In the morning in particular, however, it can be a result of lack of saliva, as your body cuts back on saliva production at night when you don't need it.

That saliva is needed to help wash away particles of bacteria that build up if you don't thoroughly brush your teeth before retiring to bed. If you're not producing enough saliva as you sleep, it's also possible that you are dehydrated.

How do you get rid of it?

It's an easy fix, usually! Be honest with yourself – do you always brush your teeth before bed? We're talking the whole two minutes, including gums and tongue. If not, we think you know what you need to do. Up that dental hygiene game! Before you go to bed, brush, floss and gargle your mouth wash. Being as thorough as this means that you'll remove the bacteria and old food particles that are likely otherwise decaying in your mouth.

If you already do all of these things, then start drinking more water before bed. Like we said earlier, you might just be dehydrated. You can also keep a glass of water next to your beside to help you stay hydrated throughout the night (because no one likes to get out of bed in the middle of the night).

However, if you've done all of this and at the end of the morning still have bad breath, it's time to seek out professional advice. Book an appointment with City Dentists today – we'll help you sort your problem!
