What you need to know about teeth whitening

If you're avoiding smiling for photos because your teeth aren't as white as they used to be, it's time to make a change so you can say cheese with the best of them.

Whatever your reason for wanting a brighter smile, know that the whitening treatment offered at City Dentists is extremely safe and effective.

Discover how you can wear your best and whitest smile today.

Why you should avoid over-the-counter options

If you want a long-lasting, whiter smile, it's best to stay away from over-the-counter options such as whitening strips. Although these may be inexpensive and promise good results, they will never beat professional whitening treatments in the way of longevity and finish.

Some whitening strips contain chlorine dioxide – the same chemical used to clean swimming pools. This acid whitens the teeth by wearing down the enamel and at the same time, irritates gums and increases the risk for tooth decay.

How to whiten teeth with the help of City Dentists

Our custom-made whitening trays are one of the fastest, safest and most effective whitening treatments around. This option only takes one week to reveal excellent results and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Before we begin creating your custom-made whitening trays, we may suggest booking in for a general teeth cleaning appointment to ensure that there are no existing issues that may interfere with the treatment.

Once complete, we'll make an impression of your teeth to get the most tailored mould for your whitening tray.

Before sending you away with your new, custom-made whitening tray, we'll show you exactly how to use it in order to get the best results possible. Once home, simply apply a small amount of the bleaching solution into your tray and wear for up to four hours a day or one to two weeks. Within this short time, you'll be amazed at the difference to the colour of your teeth and wonder why you never began the treatment sooner!

A few important notes

The results of your bleaching treatment will depend on how badly stained your teeth are to begin with. If your teeth are naturally very white, you'll notice a better result than if your teeth are slightly more yellow or brown. The colour of fillings, crowns, veneers and cement left from braces will not be affected by your whitening treatment.

How long the whitening lasts for will depend on the food and drink you consume. Soft drinks, coffee, tea and more surprisingly – beetroot – will all influence whether you need a touch up every six to eight months or every couple of years.
